According to local legend, foxes from throughout the Kantō region gathered beneath an ancient enoki, or hackberry tree, before proceeding to the shrine to pay homage to Inari. As the deity's messengers, the foxes were believed to produce mysterious flames known as kitsunebi, or "fox fires," whose number local farmers interpreted as an omen of the coming rice harvest.
