Little is recorded of his life, but his signed snuff bottles are highly regarded for their finely modeled relief decoration, often depicting landscapes, scholars, birds, and auspicious motifs beneath monochrome glazes. At a time when most Jingdezhen production remained anonymous, Chen distinguished himself by signing his works, establishing a recognizable personal style that has earned him a prominent place among nineteenth-century ceramic artists. His bottles are represented in important museum and private collections, and are illustrated extensively in standard references on Chinese snuff bottles.
