Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This elegant gilt-bronze standing Buddha is a refined example of Northern Wei Buddhist sculpture. The Buddha stands gracefully upon a double-lotus pedestal backed by a finely cast flame-shaped mandorla, displaying the elongated proportions and deeply carved cascading robes characteristic of Northern Wei aesthetics. The serene facial expression, prominent ushnisha, and raised right hand in Abhaya Mudra (Gesture of Fearlessness) convey both spiritual authority and compassion, while the lowered left hand balances the composition with quiet dignity. The openwork square base and richly modeled lotus pedestal reflect the sophisticated bronze casting techniques of early medieval China. Enhanced by surviving gilt surfaces, naturally developed patina, and centuries of oxidation, the sculpture embodies the spiritual elegance and artistic refinement that define Northern Wei Buddhist art.
