Private Collection, Bangkok Description:This monumental Liao‑dynasty sancai arhat sits in full lotus position upon a pierced rectangular base. The arhat bears a lifelike facial feature with raised brows and a serene meditative expression. Bare flesh is left unglazed in creamy biscuit tone, while the monk’s robe is glazed in rich green scattered with creamy‑white and amber spotted drips. The natural flowing glaze embodies the charm of ancient low‑fired pottery. Realistic folds and anatomical modelling showcase superb sculptural craftsmanship. Pierced openings on the plinth are characteristic technical details of Liao ceramic figures. Surviving examples of this large scale and integrity are extremely rare, representing a magnificent treasure of Buddhist ceramic art from medieval Northern China.
