Provenance: Private collection, Texas, USA.Description: This impressive dish is elegantly potted with a widely flared rim, shallow rounded sides, and a broad, low foot, giving the vessel a balanced, substantial profile characteristic of refined Qianlong monochrome porcelain. The interior and exterior are almost entirely covered in a rich sacrificial-red copper glaze, leaving the foot area unglazed. The glaze is thick, even, and exceptionally lustrous, displaying a deep jewel-like jujube red with a restrained, sophisticated tonality. Its smooth surface possesses a warm glasslike sheen, while the remarkably consistent coloration across the broad expanse of the vessel demonstrates the technical precision required for high-fired copper-red production. Along the mouth rim, where the glaze naturally thins during firing, a narrow and evenly defined pale “mushroom” line provides a crisp contrast with the saturated red body and is a characteristic feature of finely fired copper-red wares. Subtle linear variations within the glaze reflect the natural behavior of copper pigments under intense kiln temperatures. The foot is carefully finished, with balanced proportions and a neatly cut footrim. At the junction of the glaze and exposed porcelain body are delicate buff and pale iron-red firing tones. The recessed base is covered in a clean, finely textured white glaze and centered with a six-character “Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi” mark written in three vertical lines of underglaze-blue seal script. The cobalt is deep and controlled, while the seal-script characters are precisely proportioned and symmetrically arranged in the disciplined manner associated with Qianlong imperial marks. Copper-red was among the most technically demanding high-temperature glazes produced by the Qing imperial kilns, requiring precise control of copper pigment, kiln temperature, and reducing atmosphere. On a monochrome vessel of this scale, there is no painted decoration to disguise imperfections; the visual impact depends entirely upon the purity and consistency of the glaze, the precision of the potting, and the strength of the silhouette. With its expansive field of deep ruby-red glaze, finely defined pale rim, and restrained monumental form, this dish exemplifies the sophisticated monochrome aesthetic of Qianlong imperial porcelain and represents an important type of high-fired color-glazed vessel intended for the refined environment of the Qing court.Auction Reference: Qianlong imperial copper-red porcelains have long occupied an important position in the international market for Qing monochrome ceramics. Large dishes bearing six-character Qianlong seal marks, particularly examples distinguished by an even, saturated copper-red glaze and well-balanced form, are especially sought after. Historical realized prices vary according to size, glaze quality, condition, provenance, and publication history.
