Provenance: Private Collection, Hong KongDescription: This vessel is a classic example of the “Dulu” jar form, featuring a full and substantial silhouette. The upper section is designed with a shallow dish-shaped mouth, slightly flared rim, and a short neck with a smooth transition into the rounded body. The vessel has a flattened spherical body with a broad rounded belly, supported by a raised foot with an outward flare. Its low center of gravity, stable shape, and graceful curves demonstrate the Northern kiln tradition of combining practical function with refined decorative appeal. The entire surface is covered with a celadon glaze in a warm olive-green tone, characteristic of Yaozhou kiln’s famous lime-based celadon glaze. The glaze is smooth and subtle, with an understated sheen. Natural age-related glaze variations can be seen across the surface, while the raised carved areas reveal lighter glaze tones and the recessed areas collect deeper glaze, creating a naturally layered visual effect. The unglazed foot exposes the light beige clay body, showing a dense ceramic texture, a neatly finished base, and subtle wheel marks from the original forming process. The entire vessel is decorated with carved floral patterns using Yaozhou kiln’s signature carved decoration technique, where the background is removed to create a raised relief effect with strong three-dimensional depth. The neck area is decorated with a continuous scrolling vine pattern beneath the rim, providing an elegant transition between the upper section and the main body decoration. The main body features scrolling floral motifs arranged across the rounded surface, centered around large floral blossoms with clearly defined petals, gracefully spreading leaves, and curling vines that flow throughout the vessel. One side displays chrysanthemum-like floral designs with lively curved leaves, while the balanced arrangement creates a rich yet harmonious composition. A fan-shaped reserved panel adds further depth and complexity to the overall design.Around the lower body, a band of upward lotus-petal decoration encircles the vessel, creating a refined finishing border above the foot. The carving is confident and skillfully executed, with clear variations in depth and sharp floral outlines. The technique fully demonstrates the famous Yaozhou tradition of precise carving that reveals the texture of the clay beneath the glaze. With its powerful rounded form, sophisticated decoration, and calm celadon tone, this vessel embodies the artistic character of Song–Jin Yaozhou ceramics. The combination of bold Northern Chinese aesthetics and highly refined carved craftsmanship makes this a rare example of a Yaozhou kiln vessel suitable for both practical use and elegant display. The scrolling floral motifs symbolize continuous growth and prosperity, reflecting the refined decorative language of the period.
