Provenance: Private Collection, Pennsylvania, USADescription: This rare octagonal washer features a distinctive low, sturdy form with a raised central circular basin, creating an elegant and practical object traditionally used as a scholar’s desk accessory, including as a brush washer or incense vessel. The entire surface is covered with a white slip ground and decorated with rich brown painted designs. The eight exterior panels are divided into framed sections, each featuring different floral motifs including lotus blossoms, scrolling foliage, and decorative flower patterns. The deep brown background contrasts beautifully with the reserved white floral designs, while the flowing brushwork creates a balanced and lively composition. Some panels are enhanced with diamond-patterned textile designs, separated by brown borders and framed with linear bands, giving the decoration a refined layered appearance. The broad rim is decorated with a charming aquatic scene featuring swimming fish among lotus flowers and water plants, accented with small pearl-like details. The lively fish imagery conveys the traditional meaning of abundance and prosperity, while the spontaneous painting style reflects the distinctive folk artistic character of northern Cizhou kiln ceramics. The interior remains plain white, with natural fine crackling across the glaze that enhances its warm antique appearance. The flat base reveals the exposed gray-brown clay body with visible wheel marks, displaying the authentic firing characteristics of Cizhou ware. Cizhou kiln painted ceramics are known for their wide range of subjects and expressive decoration, and octagonal forms such as this are particularly uncommon. Combining auspicious imagery, skilled painting, and practical function, this piece represents a fine example of Song–Jin dynasty Cizhou kiln artistry.
