Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USA.Description: This vessel features a sturdy and archaic cylindrical form with a rolled rim, short neck, straight sides, slightly tapered lower body, and a raised foot. A pair of applied handles is placed symmetrically on the shoulder, allowing the vessel to be carried with cords, reflecting its original practical function as a storage container for wine or liquids. The entire body is covered in a lustrous black glaze, with fine grayish speckles naturally scattered across the surface, creating an authentic aged appearance. A broad unglazed decorative band runs around the body, featuring the signature Cizhou carved decoration technique. The surface was first covered with black glaze, then the decorative areas were carved away to reveal the light beige clay beneath, creating a striking contrast between the dark floral design and the exposed ceramic body. The main decoration consists of scrolling floral motifs with full, flowing leaves and elegant carved lines, arranged in a continuous and balanced composition. Multiple horizontal bands divide the decorative areas, creating a clear and refined visual structure. Original white ink inscriptions remain around the shoulder and mouth area, providing valuable historical information. The exposed foot reveals a coarse yet solid northern kiln clay body with simple and natural trimming. Carved decoration was one of the most important artistic techniques of the Cizhou kiln, and this piece represents a fine example with its powerful form, well-preserved decoration, and strong character of northern folk ceramic art.
