Dimensions: Height 34 cm, width 24.4 cm (approximately 13.4 in. high, 9.6 in. wide; approximately 1.12 ft high, 0.80 ft wide)Condition and Provenance: Good overall condition with an authentic aged appearance. The vessel remains intact, with natural soil staining, kiln marks, and surface traces developed over centuries. The exposed clay base shows the distinctive rustic character of northern Chinese kiln wares. Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This impressive ewer features a full and powerful body with a flared mouth, waisted neck, rounded belly, and flat base. A short straight spout extends from one side, while the shoulder is decorated with one carrying handle and four attached loops, including paired side loops and a central double-bridge loop. These openings were designed for cords, reflecting its original function as a large practical wine storage vessel. The entire body is covered with a white glaze ground, giving the surface a soft and warm appearance, with natural soil staining and aged marks that add to its historical character. The decoration uses a rare Cizhou kiln dotted painting technique, combining green and brown-yellow pigments to create a lively composition. Carefully arranged circular dots form the main auspicious beast motifs, complemented by floral vines on both sides. The layered dot patterns create a rich and complex design, with subtle variations in color intensity and a highly distinctive artistic style, different from the more commonly seen black-painted Cizhou wares. The exposed foot reveals a light yellowish clay body with a coarse yet sturdy texture, featuring the typical characteristics of northern Cizhou kiln ceramics. Large four-handle ewers with white-ground polychrome decoration are uncommon, and this example successfully combines practical function with folk ceramic artistry. With its impressive scale, complete decoration, and unique craftsmanship, it represents a remarkable example of Cizhou painted ceramics.
