Provenance: Private Collection, California, USADescription: This Cizhou ware prunus vase features a well-proportioned and powerful form, with a small mouth, short neck, broad shoulder, full rounded body, and a gently tapered lower section. The balanced silhouette represents a classic decorative vessel style of the Song–Jin period. The entire surface is covered with a white slip ground and decorated using the refined carved black technique. The vessel was first coated with black glaze, and then the areas surrounding the design were carefully carved away to reveal the white slip beneath, creating a dramatic black-and-white contrast. The neck and shoulder transition is decorated with radiating lotus-petal motifs, serving as an elegant border between the decorative sections. The main body features a continuous peony scroll design, with blooming peonies arranged in a dynamic composition. The layered petals, finely carved veins, and flowing branches create a sense of movement and balance across the surface. The peony motif, symbolizing prosperity and lasting fortune, was one of the most celebrated decorative themes in Cizhou ware. The lower section is finished with vertical chrysanthemum-petal decoration, creating harmony between the upper and lower designs. The warm glaze tone, strong contrast, and confident carving technique demonstrate the bold artistic character of northern Chinese folk kilns. White-ground carved decoration represents one of the most sophisticated techniques of Cizhou ware, requiring exceptional craftsmanship and surviving in fewer examples than painted wares. With its impressive size, complete decoration, and refined workmanship, this vase represents an outstanding example of Cizhou kiln carved ware.
