Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This Liao dynasty sancai ewer is an exceptional example of Chinese ceramic sculpture, created in the form of a mandarin duck and combining practical function with decorative beauty. The duck is modeled with a raised head, a broad pointed beak, and a carefully shaped body. The head is covered in white glaze, while the neck feathers are highlighted with rich green glaze, creating a layered and natural appearance. The rounded body is decorated with finely molded feather patterns, with detailed textures across the wings and belly. The feathers are enhanced with multiple glaze colors, including green for the wings, yellow for the body, and white reserved areas, producing a striking contrast and lively visual effect. A lotus-form pouring opening rises from the back, with molded lotus petal decoration inside. One side features a gracefully curved handle formed as a scrolling chi-dragon motif, elegantly connected to the body with refined sculptural details. The base remains unglazed, revealing a light-colored ceramic body typical of Liao production. Covered overall with low-fired yellow, green, and white sancai glaze, the surface displays a warm texture with natural crazing and harmonious color transitions. The combination of realistic animal modeling and functional vessel design reflects the creativity of Liao ceramic craftsmanship. The mandarin duck has long symbolized harmony and good fortune, making this type of vessel one of the most distinctive examples of Liao dynasty figural ceramics. Building upon Tang sancai traditions while developing a unique northern aesthetic, this piece represents the bold and expressive artistic style of Liao ceramics and is highly valued for both historical importance and artistic merit.
