The rim and foot show original exposed clay areas with natural firing marks and signs of age, while the overall structure remains well preserved. Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USADescription: This elegant incense burner is modeled after ancient bronze gui vessels and represents a refined ritual-style form from the Song dynasty. It features a wide mouth, waisted neck, rounded body, and a raised circular foot. Two shallow horizontal bands decorate the neck, while symmetrical fish-shaped handles extend from both sides, creating a graceful and dignified silhouette. The entire vessel is covered with a thick Longquan fangqing celadon glaze, displaying a soft jade-like texture and a calm blue-green tone. The glaze surface reveals natural fine crazing with a subtle inner glow. Along the rim, the thinner glaze exposes a reddish clay edge, known as the classic Longquan “cinnabar red rim” effect, while the foot reveals the original body with natural firing coloration and a dense ceramic texture. The overall design combines the solemn elegance of ancient bronze ritual vessels with the refined beauty of Song dynasty celadon. Southern Song Longquan fangqing celadon represents the highest achievement of Chinese celadon glazing, and fish-handled gui-form incense burners were highly prized scholar’s objects. With its elegant form, refined glaze, and quiet artistic presence, this piece reflects the exceptional craftsmanship and aesthetic ideals of Song dynasty ceramics.
