Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA Description: This impressive Tianqiu vase represents the refined artistry of Qing dynasty imperial porcelain from the Kangxi period. The underside bears a six-character underglaze blue Kangxi reign mark reading “Da Qing Kangxi Nian Zhi.” The vase features the classic Tianqiu form with a small mouth, tall straight neck, full spherical body, and slightly flared foot, creating a balanced and powerful silhouette. The narrow white-glazed rim contrasts beautifully with the deep black ground covering the vessel. The entire surface is decorated in the famille verte palette with a continuous scene of a powerful dragon moving through a flourishing garden. The emerald-green dragon is finely rendered with detailed scales, an expressive head, flowing whiskers, and strong claws. Surrounding the dragon are blooming peonies, seasonal flowers, and auspicious pomegranates near the base, symbolizing blessings, longevity, and prosperity. The vivid palette of green, red, yellow, blue, and brown stands out dramatically against the black background. The painter’s technique is highly refined, with carefully outlined leaves, floral details, and dragon scales creating a richly layered composition that remains elegant despite its elaborate decoration. The interior and base are covered with white glaze, while the foot displays natural age wear and traces of firing characteristics. Black-ground famille verte porcelain was one of the most technically challenging and distinctive categories of Qing dynasty ceramics, and surviving examples are relatively rare. With its impressive scale, auspicious imagery, and dynamic dragon decoration, this vase represents a remarkable example of Kangxi period decorative porcelain suitable for important interior display.
