拍品描述

Dimensions: Height 37.5 cm (14.76 in); 14th Century Condition & Provenance: Preserved in excellent overall condition. The underglaze red decoration retains its naturally matured tone, while the luminous white glaze remains smooth and glossy with an attractive aged surface. Honest wear is visible along the unglazed foot rim, accompanied by naturally accumulated kiln and age deposits consistent with centuries of preservation. From a distinguished private collection in California, USA.Description: This monumental meiping represents one of the most technically ambitious underglaze red porcelains produced during the Yuan Dynasty. The vessel features a small everted mouth, a short constricted neck, broad rounded shoulders, and a gracefully tapering body rising from a shallow unglazed foot, creating the powerful silhouette that defines the finest Yuan ceremonial meiping forms. Executed in the extraordinarily demanding reserve-decoration technique, the body is covered in a rich underglaze red ground while the principal imagery is left in white relief, producing remarkable visual depth and dramatic contrast. Around the shoulder runs a luxuriant band of scrolling lotus vines with broad leaves and fully opened blossoms arranged in a dense yet balanced composition, reflecting the monumental decorative style favored during the Yuan period. Dominating the body is an impressive white dragon carved in reserve against the deep crimson-red background. The dragon twists energetically through swirling clouds with remarkable movement and vitality. Its powerful head is crowned with sweeping horns, flowing whiskers, sharply modeled jaws, and finely detailed scales, while muscular claws reach confidently through rolling clouds carved with exceptional depth and rhythm. The sculptural treatment gives the dragon extraordinary presence, making it appear to emerge directly from the surrounding crimson field. Beneath the main scene, a scrolling floral border encircles the lower body before transitioning into a band of elongated upright lotus petals, each enriched with stylized ruyi-cloud motifs that complete the carefully structured decorative program. The underglaze red has matured into a rich wine-red tone with the subtle mottling and natural diffusion highly prized in authentic Yuan underglaze red porcelains. The creamy white glaze possesses a soft bluish cast and silky texture, creating a striking contrast that dramatically emphasizes the reserve-carved dragon. The unglazed sandy foot reveals a dense porcelain body with clearly visible turning marks and naturally developed age deposits accumulated through centuries of preservation. Monumental Yuan underglaze red porcelains of this scale are exceptionally scarce due to the extreme firing difficulty associated with the technique. Combining reserve carving, sculptural modeling, and sophisticated underglaze red decoration, this museum-quality meiping stands among the most impressive expressions of Yuan ceramic artistry and represents an outstanding example of early Chinese high-fired porcelain at its finest.
