Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USA.Description: This exceptional Goryeo celadon vase represents the classic Yuhuchunping form, featuring an elegantly flared rim, slender neck, rounded body, and a refined foot. The silhouette is graceful and perfectly balanced, combining a dignified presence with the understated elegance of Korean aesthetics. The entire surface is covered in a soft blue-green celadon glaze with a rich, even texture and natural crackling, displaying the signature beauty of Goryeo celadon. The decoration is carefully arranged in multiple layers, with carved scrolling cloud and vine motifs around the shoulder, while the body is decorated with deeply carved scrolling peony patterns. The full peony blossoms are beautifully shaped, with clearly defined veins and flowing branches creating a harmonious composition. The deep carving technique creates strong relief and elegant contrast beneath the glaze, showing remarkable craftsmanship. The lower section is decorated with an upright lotus petal band, complementing the main floral design. The foot is finely finished with a subtle exposed clay edge. The base features a deeply carved “Chao Zhen” inscription, executed in a simple yet powerful style. Goryeo celadon pieces bearing this inscription are rare and were likely made for elite collectors or religious settings. Influenced by Chinese Yue and Yaozhou celadon traditions while developing its own distinctive artistic language, this carved peony Yuhuchunping vase is an important example of Goryeo ceramic excellence, valued for both historical significance and refined decorative beauty.
