Provenance: Private collection, Hong Kong, retained in the collection for more than fifty years.Description:This classic Goryeo celadon lidded jar is finely potted with a compressed globular body, gently constricted mouth, short neck, broad rounded shoulders, and a full swelling belly tapering toward a low circular foot. The accompanying lid is surmounted by a sculptural lotus-bud finial, its softly modeled petals rising above a broad, gently domed cover bordered by a precisely organized key-fret band. The balanced proportions and softly rounded profile give the vessel the substantial yet elegant presence associated with refined Goryeo ceramic production. The entire vessel is covered in a characteristic celadon glaze of softly muted gray-green tone, displaying a warm, restrained luster and an extensive network of fine natural craquelure. Around the shoulder is a band of white-inlaid lotus-petal ornament separated by linear borders. The principal decoration across the body employs the celebrated Goryeo sanggam inlay technique, in which designs were incised into the clay body and filled with contrasting white and dark slips before glazing and firing. White slip defines the layered chrysanthemum blossoms and rounded buds, while dark slip articulates the stems, leaves, flower centers, and curling branches. Two graceful sprays of chrysanthemums extend naturally across the rounded body, their layered blossoms and rhythmic foliage creating a striking yet understated contrast against the celadon ground. The lid is further enriched with a continuous geometric key-fret border, while the sculptural lotus-bud finial completes the floral decorative program. The underside is supported on a neatly cut exposed foot, where the transition between glaze and body reveals natural firing and age-related characteristics. Combining a beautifully balanced form, softly luminous celadon glaze, black-and-white inlay, chrysanthemum decoration, and a distinctive lotus finial, this jar exemplifies the sophisticated decorative vocabulary for which mature Goryeo inlaid celadon is internationally celebrated.
