Provenance: Private collection, Hong Kong, retained in the collection for more than fifty years.Description:This impressive large Yue celadon bowl is elegantly formed with a six-lobed floral rim, widely flared sides, a gently rounded interior, and a substantial low circular foot. The softly undulating rim creates the profile of an open blossom, while the broad 27 cm diameter gives the vessel a commanding presence without sacrificing the refined proportions associated with Yue ceramics of the late Tang and Five Dynasties periods. The bowl is covered inside and out with a softly muted celadon glaze displaying warm olive, pale green, and yellowish tones. The glaze is substantial yet restrained in luster, with an extensive network of fine elongated craquelure running across the interior and exterior surfaces. Areas of reddish-brown staining and burial accretions appear throughout the vessel, creating a richly layered surface against the subdued celadon ground. The spacious interior is deliberately undecorated, allowing the quality of the glaze, the sweeping curvature of the walls, and the floral outline of the rim to define the composition. From the shallow central well, the sides rise in a continuous, graceful curve toward the six-lobed mouth, giving the bowl a particularly open and elegant silhouette. The exterior is equally restrained, with the rounded walls tapering smoothly toward the broad, low foot. The underside and foot retain reddish-brown accretions, glaze wear, and other age-related surface characteristics. Floral-rimmed vessels were an important form in late Tang and Five Dynasties ceramic production, translating the silhouette of an opening blossom into a sophisticated architectural profile. Combining unusually generous scale, an elegant six-lobed rim, understated celadon glaze, and a strong sculptural silhouette, this bowl embodies the quiet refinement, disciplined proportions, and glaze-centered aesthetic for which mature Yue ware is celebrated.
