Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USA.Description: This Jian ware tea bowl features the classic Song dynasty constricted-rim form, with a slightly flared rim, a subtle raised line below the mouth, gently curving walls, and a thick low foot. The balanced and substantial silhouette represents the standard tea bowl style favored during the height of Song dynasty tea culture. The entire bowl is covered with a deep black glaze that appears dense, smooth, and richly luminous. Inside the bowl, silver-gray hare’s fur patterns radiate outward from the center toward the rim, with fine streaks extending naturally in a rhythmic arrangement. The delicate lines display a cool silver sheen, with gradual variations in density and movement created by the natural interaction of glaze and kiln fire. Small glaze droplets appear in areas, adding further depth and character. The exterior continues with flowing hare’s fur patterns, accompanied by subtle natural crackle lines that enhance its aged appearance. The glaze stops above the foot, revealing the signature dark iron-colored Jian kiln clay beneath. The clay body is dense and coarse, rich in iron content, while the neatly trimmed foot preserves the rustic craftsmanship and turning marks of the Song period. Silver hare’s fur is considered one of the finest and rarer varieties among Jian tea bowls, distinguished from the more common gold hare’s fur examples by its elegant and restrained silver-toned brilliance. With its refined glaze, dynamic patterning, balanced form, and excellent preservation, this bowl represents an outstanding example of Song dynasty Jian kiln tea ware.
