Provenance: Private Collection, Hong Kong.Description: This bowl represents a classic Song dynasty tea ware form associated with the tradition of tea competitions. It features an open flared rim, gently sloping sides, and a wide sturdy foot, creating a balanced and elegant silhouette typical of southern kiln production. The entire surface is covered with a rich, glossy black glaze, while the thinner glaze along the rim creates a natural warm brown-gold edge. Fine surface scratches developed over centuries add to its aged character. The exterior glaze stops above the foot, revealing the dry, rustic beige clay body underneath. The rough trimming of the foot reflects the distinctive craftsmanship of regional folk kilns during the Song period. The interior decoration is especially unique, featuring finely painted silver radiating lines spreading outward from the center like rays of sunlight. A preserved silver inscription remains at the center, with an understated and ancient calligraphic style. The strong contrast between the black glazed surface and silver decoration creates a striking visual effect. Silver-painted decoration on Song dynasty tea bowls is rare, and the slight oxidation of the silver further enhances its historical character. During the Song dynasty, black glazed tea bowls were highly valued for tea competitions, and this example combines practical function with refined artistic craftsmanship, making it a remarkable surviving piece.
