Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This carved green stone sculpture presents an auspicious guardian beast carved from a single block of stone and set upon a rectangular base. The mythical beast is shown with a raised head, upright ears, wide open eyes, and a powerful expression, creating a sense of strength and protection. The flowing carved mane surrounds the neck with elegant curved lines, while the muscular body, defined chest, and sculpted back details emphasize the animal’s vitality. The sturdy legs firmly stand on the base, with clearly rendered claws, and the upward-curled tail adds a dynamic quality to the composition. The dense stone surface preserves traces of old reddish-brown lacquer and pale ground decoration, naturally worn through time, creating an authentic antique appearance. The rectangular base is solid and retains old polishing marks from long-term use. Traditionally associated with protection, guardianship, and the warding off of negative influences, this type of small stone guardian sculpture was suitable for scholarly spaces and elegant interior display. The work reflects a simple yet powerful carving style, combining sculptural artistry with auspicious symbolism.
