Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA Description: This elegant plum vase follows the classic Song dynasty form, featuring a small mouth, gently flared rim, short neck, full rounded shoulder, and a slender body tapering gracefully toward the base. The overall silhouette is refined yet powerful, displaying the restrained and timeless beauty of Song ceramics. The entire surface is covered with a warm ivory-white glaze, with a subtle aged appearance and a naturally weathered glaze surface. The shoulder is decorated with a ring of radiating chrysanthemum petal motifs, carved with smooth and confident lines. The central body features an exceptionally rare pierced and carved design of scrolling peony blossoms. The large peony flowers bloom in layered clusters, surrounded by gracefully curling leaves and vines. The carving is deep and precise, combined with openwork piercing to create a beautiful contrast between solid and open spaces. This sophisticated openwork technique required exceptional craftsmanship and represents one of the more unusual decorative methods found in Cizhou ware. The open spaces allow light to pass through the decoration, creating a dynamic and elegant visual effect. Beneath the pierced floral section is a geometric meander band, while the lower body is decorated with upright lotus petal patterns. The carefully arranged decorative zones demonstrate the skilled craftsmanship and artistic refinement of Song dynasty Cizhou ceramics.
