The mirror retains a well-preserved raised decoration, with an authentic dark lacquer-like patina and areas of natural green corrosion developed over centuries. The surface shows an aged and naturally formed appearance with rich historical character. Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA Description: This circular bronze mirror features a raised hemispherical knob at the center and a substantial, well-cast body. The reflective surface displays a deep black patina typical of ancient bronze mirrors, with scattered areas of natural green oxidation adding to its antique appearance. The reverse is arranged in multiple decorative zones with a highly detailed composition. Surrounding the central knob is a powerful repeated mythical beast design rendered in high relief. The surrounding creatures and immortal figures are arranged in a dynamic circular pattern, with flowing manes, extended wings, and archaic facial expressions. Lotus-shaped ornaments and pearl-like motifs fill the spaces between the figures, while square inscription panels containing auspicious inscriptions further enhance the design, representing a classic style of Six Dynasties mythical beast mirrors. The outer decorative bands are carefully organized with layers of sawtooth patterns, flowing cloud motifs, scrolling foliage, and beaded borders. The relief carving is strong and three-dimensional, displaying excellent casting craftsmanship and precise, energetic lines. The reverse surface remains broad and even, with a thick outer rim.
