Dimensions & Weight: Diameter 21 cm (8.27 in, 0.69 ft); Weight 1197 g (approx. 2.64 lbs); Tang Dynasty, 7th–10th Century Condition & Provenance: The mirror is in good condition with a naturally developed ancient bronze patina. The surface retains a silvery aged bronze appearance, with areas of natural green corrosion and reddish-brown mineral deposits along the edges and within the carved decoration. The decorative details remain clearly preserved, showing authentic traces of age. Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA Description: This Tang dynasty bronze mirror is crafted in an elegant eight-lobed form, representing one of the most iconic mirror styles of the prosperous Tang period. Cast in fine bronze, the reverse displays a refined aged surface with a silvery bronze tone, while areas around the rim and decorative details reveal natural layers of green and reddish-brown patination accumulated over centuries. The central knob is rounded and raised, with a pierced opening designed for suspension. The entire decorative field is executed in high relief, creating a richly composed and dynamic design. The main motif features a pair of auspicious phoenixes symmetrically arranged on both sides, their wings spread gracefully and their bodies intertwined with flowing floral branches. Surrounding the birds are continuous scrolling vines decorated with peonies, lotus blossoms, and floral buds, all rendered with finely carved details and smooth, rhythmic lines. In Tang decorative art, phoenix imagery symbolizes harmony, prosperity, and longevity, while endless floral scrolls represent continuous growth, abundance, and lasting fortune. The deep and shallow relief work creates a strong three-dimensional effect, demonstrating the exceptional casting skills and sophisticated aesthetic taste of the Tang dynasty. The mirror reflects the luxurious and open artistic spirit of the Tang era, with a warm surface tone and naturally formed corrosion patterns that enhance its historical character.
