Dimensions & Weight: 5.8 cm × 7.56 cm (2.28 × 2.98 in, 0.19 × 0.25 ft); Weight 26 g (approx. 0.92 oz); Han Dynasty, 2nd Century BCE–2nd Century CE Condition & Provenance: The jade is in good condition with a naturally aged surface, displaying deep mineral staining, soft gray and dark gray areas of ancient burial patina, and subtle yellow-brown earth deposits. The surface has developed a rich, warm patina over centuries, while the openwork carving remains well preserved. Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USADescription: This Han dynasty jade bi disc is masterfully carved from Hetian jade and represents the classic openwork style of early Chinese ritual jade craftsmanship. The surface displays deep natural alteration, with layers of gray-white and dark gray mineral staining penetrating into the jade, accompanied by subtle yellow-brown earth tones and a thick, naturally developed ancient patina. The central opening follows the traditional form of the jade bi, while the surface is decorated with finely incised swirling patterns executed with precise and elegant carving lines. Extending beyond the circular body is a sophisticated openwork design featuring two powerful chi dragons. The paired dragons are carved with dynamic, curling bodies, strong limbs, raised heads, and flowing tails, creating a lively sense of movement and balance. Fine incised lines define the scales, hair, and body details, demonstrating the refined “silk-line carving” technique characteristic of Han dynasty jade artistry. The extensive openwork carving creates a striking contrast between solid and open spaces, with carefully polished edges reflecting the highly skilled workmanship of ancient jade craftsmen. In Han culture, chi dragons symbolized protection, auspicious power, and communication between heaven and earth, while the jade bi represented the concept of the round heavens and was an important ritual object. Openwork jade bi designs flourished during the Warring States and Han periods and represent some of the highest achievements of ancient Chinese jade carving. With its balanced form, natural aged surface, and powerful artistic presence, this piece represents an outstanding example of Han dynasty openwork jade craftsmanship.
