Provenance: Private collection in Florida, USA.Description: This Tang Dynasty sancai water bowl, also known as a sancai scholar’s water vessel, is a refined example of low-fired lead-glazed ceramic from the prosperous Tang period. The vessel features a rounded bowl form with a slightly contracted rim and a full, softly curved body, creating a stable and elegant silhouette. The body is made of the typical white ceramic clay associated with Tang sancai production. The exterior is decorated using a flowing glaze technique, with a white base layered with yellow, green, and blue glazes that naturally merge across the surface. Blue glaze was especially rare among Tang sancai wares, making this piece particularly noteworthy. The colorful glazes flow downward in spontaneous patterns, creating a dynamic kiln-transformation effect, while fine natural crazing across the surface enhances its antique character. The lower body remains partially unglazed, revealing the original white clay with natural weathering and soil staining. The flat unglazed base preserves traditional shaping marks, and the rounded glaze accumulation at the edges reflects the original pouring-glaze technique of the period. The interior is lightly glazed with a deep cavity, originally designed as a scholar’s water container. Rather than relying on applied decoration, the vessel achieves its artistic expression through the natural movement and fusion of glaze colors, reflecting the bold, free, and sophisticated aesthetic of the Tang Dynasty.
