Northern Wei to Sui Dynasty 5th–7th century gilt bronze Buddhist sculpture,Condition and Provenance: Overall in good condition, with areas of preserved gilt surface, natural bronze patina, green oxidation, and age-related wear consistent with an ancient bronze sculpture. The back retains the characteristic casting opening commonly seen in early Chinese gilt bronze Buddhist figures. Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA,Description: This remarkable gilt bronze standing Buddha is a classic example of the bench-style Buddhist sculpture that was popular from the Northern and Southern Dynasties through the Sui period. These compact devotional images were designed for personal worship and portable religious practice. The sculpture is cast as a single piece consisting of the standing Buddha figure, the raised lotus pedestal, and the four-legged square bench base. The Buddha stands upright on a double lotus platform, featuring a high ushnisha, carefully carved hair details, a softly rounded face, urna between the brows, and a peaceful, compassionate expression. The raised right hand forms the abhaya mudra, symbolizing protection from fear, while the lowered left hand forms the varada mudra, representing the granting of wishes and blessings. The Buddha wears a full-length monastic robe with richly layered folds, expressed through smooth flowing lines that capture the natural drape of the fabric. The back features a rectangular casting opening, a distinctive technical characteristic found in early Chinese gilt bronze Buddhist sculptures. The lotus petals are full and three-dimensional, while the lower square four-legged bench base features a wave-shaped apron decoration, representing the defining form of the “bench Buddha” style.
