Dimensions: Height 21 cm, Diameter 19.5 cm (approx. 8.27 in H × 7.68 in diameter; approx. 0.69 ft H × 0.64 ft diameter),Condition and Provenance: The incense burner is preserved in good overall condition, with the cover and body remaining intact. The surface displays natural kiln variations, aged surface characteristics, and an old patina, while the exposed ceramic body shows natural weathering consistent with age. Condition is based on the physical examination of the piece. Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA,Description: This early proto-porcelain incense burner belongs to the Yue kiln tradition and represents an important example of early Chinese ceramic craftsmanship. The piece consists of a vessel body and a fitted cover. The body is made of reddish-brown coarse ceramic with a natural, unrefined texture characteristic of early fired wares. The straight-sided vessel rests on a flared high foot, while the exterior is decorated with continuous carved wave patterns separated by raised circular lines. The restrained carving style reflects the artistic language of early Chinese pottery from the pre-Qin through Han periods. The domed cover is coated with a rich brown glaze featuring uneven thickness, warm tonal variations, natural kiln effects, and scattered dark mineral spots. The cover surface is decorated with concentric carved wave patterns that echo the design of the vessel body. Multiple triangular and circular openings allow smoke to escape, demonstrating the practical function of the incense burner. The center of the cover features a multi-layered lotus-bud finial created through raised molding techniques, with additional ventilation openings and a strong three-dimensional quality. The overall form is balanced and dignified, combining practical use with refined early ceramic aesthetics. The contrast between the unglazed body and glazed cover represents a distinctive production method of early proto-celadon wares. Complete examples with elaborately molded covers are rare, making this piece an important surviving example for the study of early Chinese incense culture and proto-porcelain technology.
