Provenance: Private Collection, Paris, France,Description: This impressive Northern Wei Dynasty Buddha head is carved from fine white marble, featuring a refined stone texture and a serene, dignified presence. The sculpture represents the elegant style of early Chinese Buddhist art. The Buddha’s ushnisha is full and rounded, covered with carefully arranged spiral curls. Each curl is precisely carved with balanced spacing and detailed workmanship, while traces of natural aging remain on the surface. The face is softly rounded with smooth, restrained contours. The lowered eyes convey deep meditation and compassion, while the straight nose, full lips, and subtle smile create a calm and spiritual expression. The elongated ears extending toward the jaw reflect the traditional Buddhist characteristic of elongated earlobes. Following mature Buddhist sculptural conventions, the facial modeling is natural and harmonious, avoiding exaggerated forms and emphasizing quiet elegance. The marble surface displays fine natural cracks and aged coloration developed over centuries, creating a strong sense of history and authenticity. Rather than relying on elaborate decoration, the sculpture achieves its power through refined proportions, balanced volume, and a peaceful spiritual expression. It embodies the timeless aesthetic of Chinese Buddhist art and represents a highly collectible example of early Buddhist sculpture.
