The paper shows natural aging, subtle tonal variations, and authentic traces of time. The brushwork, inscriptions, and seals remain clearly visible. Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USA,Description: This elegant horizontal framed painting represents the refined tradition of Chinese literati bird-and-flower painting. The work is presented in its original black and gold frame with decorative silk mounting, creating a sophisticated presentation suitable for a study or formal interior. The painting is executed on aged warm-toned paper with natural signs of time, giving the work a rich antique atmosphere. The composition depicts a graceful bamboo grove inhabited by five lively squirrels. Several bamboo stalks are arranged in a natural and balanced manner, painted with light blue-green tones combined with soft ink washes, while the joints of the bamboo are carefully defined. The bamboo leaves are rendered with clean and energetic brushstrokes, creating an elegant rhythm between dense and open spaces. Among the bamboo branches, five squirrels are portrayed with expressive detail. The artist uses textured ink brushwork to capture their soft, full fur, while bright yellow highlights bring life to their eyes. Some squirrels climb along the bamboo, some move between the branches, and others look toward each other, creating a charming sense of movement and interaction. The left side bears a running-script inscription reading “After the brush style of Jie Shanmu, early summer of the Renchen year, Shixiang,” accompanied by a red artist seal. Additional red seals appear on the right side, complementing the overall composition. The inscription indicates that the painting follows the artistic approach of Jie Shanmu, continuing the traditional Chinese subject of bamboo and squirrels. Bamboo symbolizes the integrity of the gentleman, while squirrels represent vitality and abundance. With elegant brushwork, balanced composition, and a refined literati atmosphere, this work combines natural observation with scholarly artistic expression. The aged paper surface and carefully preserved framing further enhance its decorative and collectible appeal.
