Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USA,Description: This important three-panel hanging scroll set consists of a central calligraphy scroll paired with two matching running-script couplet scrolls, preserved in its original traditional mounting format. Executed on aged paper with natural crackling patterns, the work carries a strong sense of history and classical character. The central scroll is written in the Wang Xizhi running-script style and features an excerpt from “Fashi Tie”: “However, the true teachings are difficult to fully comprehend, and their ultimate meaning cannot easily be unified; superficial studies are easier to follow, causing confusion between the correct and incorrect paths. Therefore, discussions of emptiness and existence may follow common customs, while the teachings of different vehicles rise and decline according to changing times. The Dharma Master Xuanzang was a leading figure of the Buddhist tradition.” The work bears the signature of Wang Xizhi. The calligraphy follows the elegant spirit of Jin dynasty running script, with flowing brush movement, balanced composition, refined structure, and rich ink expression. Numerous antique collector seals are applied throughout the surface, showing traces of historical appreciation and transmission. The right couplet reads “Standing beneath spring winds through the ages,” while the left couplet reads “A single long flute sounds beneath the moon.” The running script is fluid and graceful, creating a refined and distant artistic atmosphere. The couplet scrolls match the central work in style and presentation, forming a classic three-scroll arrangement for traditional Chinese halls. All three pieces retain their old silk mounting, with aged silk borders displaying warm tones and complete scroll ends. The paper surface has developed fine natural crackling over time, and the ink has deeply settled into the paper without obvious surface floating. As Wang Xizhi is honored as the “Sage of Calligraphy,” his running script has influenced generations of Chinese calligraphers. This complete three-panel composition combines poetry, calligraphy, collector seals, and traditional mounting, offering significant aesthetic, decorative, and collectible value.
