Painted on aged paper, the composition depicts Guanyin seated gracefully upon a large lotus throne. The figure wears a flowing robe and veil, with the garments outlined through Xu Beihong’s refined and powerful baimiao linear technique. The concise yet expressive lines demonstrate a fusion of traditional Chinese figure painting methods and Western realistic modeling. Guanyin’s calm expression, peaceful gaze, and the gesture holding a pure water vase convey a sense of compassion and serenity. On the left side, a cluster of bamboo is rendered with reddish-brown trunks and layered ink tones on the leaves, creating a subtle balance between solid and empty space while establishing a quiet Zen atmosphere. A soft blue-green wash at the lower section enhances the tranquil and ethereal mood of the scene. On the right side, a vertical inscription reads “Dedicated to Mr. Kaiyuan, respectfully painted by Beihong,” followed by two artist seals reading “Xu” and “Beihong.” An additional leisure seal appears at the lower left corner, with all impressions remaining clear and complete. The inscription indicates that the work was created as an offering for Mr. Kaiyuan, with a clear devotional purpose. The Guanyin theme symbolizes peace, protection, and blessings; bamboo represents humility and integrity, while the lotus throne symbolizes purity and spiritual enlightenment. By combining Western realistic figure techniques with traditional Chinese line drawing and freehand bamboo painting, this work reflects Xu Beihong’s distinctive artistic style.
