More than ten magpies are skillfully rendered throughout the composition, with their wings and feathers finely detailed in ink tones and soft blue shades, each bird shown in a different flying posture with remarkable vitality. The “magpies on plum blossoms” motif is a traditional auspicious design symbolizing happiness, good fortune, and the arrival of joyful occasions. The exterior is decorated with famille-rose scrolling floral patterns on a white ground, featuring peonies and various blooming flowers painted in soft tones of pink, green, yellow, blue, and red. The base is inscribed with the four-character iron-red “Tongzhi Nian Zhi” mark in regular script. With its luxurious yellow ground, refined painting style, and auspicious imagery, this charger represents the decorative elegance of late Qing Tongzhi-period famille-rose porcelain and embodies both artistic beauty and symbolic meaning.
