The softly rounded rim and gently tapering body create a calm and balanced appearance, representing the refined aesthetic of Song dynasty scholar objects. The entire surface is covered in a delicate sky-blue glaze, showing a serene and even tone with naturally formed fine crackles throughout. The glaze has a jade-like texture with a subtle, understated luster, displaying the distinctive creamy “buttery” quality associated with Ru ware. Small traces of aged soil staining remain within the interior, adding to its historical character. The thinly applied glaze along the rim reveals a faint hint of the original body color. The base preserves the famous Ru kiln sesame-spur firing method, with five precise support marks and a warm beige exposed clay tone. Known for its celebrated color described as “the sky clearing after rain,” Ru ware represents one of the highest achievements of Song imperial ceramics. With its elegant form, pure glaze color, and refined scholarly character, this washer is a rare example of a Song dynasty imperial ceramic object, further enhanced by its carved hardwood stand.
