Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USA.Description: This remarkable Hongshan Culture jade figure is carved from chicken-bone white Hetian jade and represents one of the most iconic prehistoric deity forms associated with ancient ritual belief. The entire surface has undergone natural whitening through burial conditions, displaying a pale chicken-bone white tone with scattered earth stains and naturally formed surface textures that highlight its great age. The figure is shown in a seated crouching posture with both arms crossed in front of the body. The head features a dramatic pair of large curved horn-like projections with pointed ears on both sides, while the face combines human and animal characteristics with raised eyes and a powerful, simplified expression. The forehead is decorated with incised geometric patterns, including diamond grids and triangular motifs, executed with the characteristic fine-line carving technique of Hongshan jade art. The reverse is carved with organized geometric designs, and a drilled suspension hole on the side indicates its original function as a ritual pendant or ceremonial object. The compact body, folded legs, and simplified feet create a strong and mysterious presence. Representing an ancestral deity worshipped by the Hongshan people, this figure combines human and animal symbolism and reflects the spiritual world of prehistoric ritual practices. With its bold form, abstract design, and powerful artistic expression, it is an outstanding example of early Chinese jade sculpture.
