Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This finely carved white marble standing Bodhisattva represents the refined craftsmanship of early Chinese Buddhist sculpture. Carved from a delicate white marble, the figure presents an elegant and elongated silhouette with a calm and dignified presence. The Bodhisattva wears an elaborate jeweled crown with finely carved details, while the tied hair and long strands descend naturally behind the neck. The softly rounded face, gently lowered eyes, and serene expression convey a sense of compassion and spiritual tranquility. Although the arms are missing, the remaining sculpture preserves remarkable details, including the draped scarf over the shoulders, intricate necklaces, bracelets, waist ornaments, and cascading jeweled adornments. The carved beads, floral motifs, and hanging tassels are executed with impressive precision. The long robe features vertically flowing folds, capturing the natural weight and movement of the fabric. The reverse side is also carefully carved with details of the hairstyle, drapery, and hanging ornaments, demonstrating that the sculpture was intended as a fully finished three-dimensional work rather than a single-view image. The stone surface displays natural aging cracks and traces of old earth staining, adding to its historical character. Despite the loss of the arms, the sculpture retains its powerful presence, balanced proportions, and exceptional artistic quality, making it a remarkable example of early Chinese Buddhist stone sculpture suitable for museum display or refined private collection.
