The porcelain body is sturdy, while the glaze displays a soft bluish-white tone with a bright and vivid cobalt decoration. The exterior is decorated with a continuous scene of lotus ponds, mandarin ducks, and auspicious phoenix birds. Scrolling lotus vines, blossoms, leaves, and aquatic plants flow gracefully across the surface, creating a lively garden scene. The mandarin ducks appear swimming among the lotus, while phoenix birds move through the floral composition, adding a sense of harmony and elegance. The rim and foot are accented with double-line borders, while the cover features a central ventilation opening surrounded by lotus scroll decoration that perfectly complements the body design. The underside bears a six-character double-line regular script mark reading “Da Ming Xuande Nian Zhi” (Made during the Xuande reign of the Great Ming Dynasty). Cricket jars were highly appreciated scholar’s objects and courtly antiques during the Ming dynasty, especially during the Xuande period, combining porcelain craftsmanship with refined literati taste. This example represents the sophisticated decorative style and artistic achievement of early Ming blue and white porcelain.
