Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USA.Description: This finely carved jade pendant is sculpted in the form of a crouching mythical animal with a compact and powerful body. The overall design is simple yet expressive, reflecting the ancient aesthetic of early Chinese jade carving. The entire surface displays natural mineral staining in shades of gray, white, and brown, with fine “hairline” alteration patterns penetrating into the jade texture and a deeply matured surface patina. The animal’s facial features are rendered in a concise and archaic manner, while a drilled opening through the mouth allows the piece to be suspended as a personal ornament. An incised symbolic pattern appears on the back, executed with simple and restrained lines. Carved primarily in the round, the pendant features smooth polishing, a solid base, and visible traces of ancient production techniques. Animal-shaped jade ornaments were important ancient personal objects, often associated with protection, auspicious meanings, and ritual significance. With its strong archaeological character, distinctive mineral alteration, and archaic form, this piece represents a remarkable example of early Chinese jade personal adornment.
