Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This elegant Song dynasty Jizhou kiln Yuhuchun vase represents one of the most distinctive decorative forms of Southern Song ceramics. The vase features a gently flared rim, slender neck, rounded body, and a neatly finished foot, creating the graceful silhouette highly admired in Song period furnishings. The entire surface is covered with Jizhou’s famous tortoiseshell glaze, showing a deep black ground with rich amber and brown flowing patches that resemble the natural patterns of a tortoiseshell shell. The glaze displays fine crackling and a warm, luminous surface created through the kiln’s natural transformation process. The body is decorated with carved plum blossom decoration, where the dark glaze has been carefully removed to reveal the warm buff-colored clay beneath. The flowering plum branches are elegantly arranged, with strong twisting branches and carefully carved blossoms and petals. The contrast between the dark glazed background and the exposed clay decoration creates a striking three-dimensional effect and highlights the exceptional carving technique of Jizhou kiln artisans. The unglazed foot reveals the original clay body with a naturally aged surface and traces of traditional wheel finishing. Jizhou kiln is one of the most important Southern Chinese kilns of the Song dynasty, especially known for its tortoiseshell glaze and carved decorative techniques. This vase combines refined form, rare glaze effects, and expressive plum blossom decoration, representing the sophisticated aesthetic taste of Song dynasty scholars and collectors.
