Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA,Description: This impressive Song Dynasty Jizhou Kiln meiping vase represents one of the most distinctive tortoiseshell-glazed wares produced in southern China. The vase features a rolled rim, short neck, broad rounded shoulder, and a gracefully tapering body, creating a powerful and elegant silhouette typical of large Song Dynasty storage and display vessels. The entire surface is covered with Jizhou Kiln’s iconic tortoiseshell glaze, where a deep black ground is transformed by flowing golden-brown patterns that resemble the natural markings of a tortoiseshell shell. The dramatic contrast between black and amber tones creates a bold yet sophisticated visual effect, with each kiln-fired pattern appearing completely unique. The glaze surface is covered with fine natural crazing, enhanced by centuries of aging that have produced a warm and refined appearance. The exposed buff-colored clay body at the base, along with the hand-finished foot and original firing marks, further reflects the craftsmanship of the Song period. Large and well-preserved Jizhou tortoiseshell-glazed meiping vases are exceptionally rare. This piece stands out for its impressive scale, dynamic glaze transformation, and strong artistic character, making it a remarkable example of Song Dynasty southern Chinese black-glazed ceramics.
