Provenance: Private Collection, Washington State, USA.Description: This Warring States jade owl pendant is carved from Hetian jade in a thin, flattened plaque form, depicting a standing owl with outstretched wings. The owl’s head is clearly defined with raised ears, while both wings extend horizontally and are decorated with restrained incised lines suggesting layered feathers. The chest and body are full and balanced, with a split, extended tail design that creates a powerful sense of movement. The overall form is dignified, archaic, and visually striking. The entire surface has undergone extensive natural calcification, developing an ivory-white appearance with scattered yellow-brown earth encrustation and natural age characteristics within the jade. The reverse features three sets of drilled suspension holes, a typical feature of ancient Chinese jade ornaments, with mature patination around the openings for wearing with a cord. The polished surface retains a warm texture and deep antique luster. The owl was an important sacred bird motif in ancient Chinese culture, and this piece represents a highly characteristic example of early jade ornamentation with strong historical and artistic appeal.
