Provenance: Private Collection, Illinois, USA.Description: This compact C-shaped dragon pendant is carved in the round from calcified “chicken-bone white” jade, with a warm creamy surface enlivened by naturally distributed ochre and reddish-brown deposits. The body is conceived as a single continuous sculptural curve, substantial and smoothly rounded through the lower section before sweeping upward toward the head. A generous open space at the center emphasizes the C-shaped silhouette, while the raised terminal balances the projecting head and gives the carving a remarkably strong profile despite its small scale. The head is the focal point of the composition. It projects forward from the upper body with a short, broad muzzle, prominently modeled eyes, and a pair of raised ears swept back along the crown. Shallow curving lines define the facial structure beneath the eyes, while the lower jaw turns subtly inward, giving the creature an alert and highly stylized expression. The transition from head to body is continuous and fluid, and the entire carving is carefully rounded and polished without sharp edges. A circular suspension perforation is positioned behind the head, allowing the piece to function as a pendant while preserving the integrity of its sculptural form. With its compact proportions, bold animal head, exaggerated eyes, swept-back ears, and powerful curling body, the piece presents the direct, highly abstract visual language associated with prehistoric zoomorphic jade carving.
