The impressed “Gong Yu” mark on the base identifies its association with imperial use during the Song dynasty. Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This Jian Kiln imperial blue Yaobian Jianzhan tea bowl measures 12.5cm in diameter and 6.7cm in height. The vessel follows the classic Jianzhan form, featuring a slightly inward-curving rim, defined mouth line, gently sloping sides, and a neatly trimmed foot. The interior is covered with a rare Yaobian blue glaze, with a deep black ground transformed by the kiln into radiant sapphire-blue patterns. The surface displays silver-white iridescent streaks spreading across the glaze, creating a dramatic floral-like optical effect with brilliant depth and movement. The glaze naturally pools along the rim, forming a vivid blue band with elegant tonal transitions, while fine crazing enhances the aged appearance. The exterior glaze stops above the foot, revealing the dark brown iron-rich clay body, a signature feature of Jian kiln production. Multiple bands of ancient carved inscriptions decorate the exterior surface, displaying an archaic and powerful calligraphic style. The center of the foot retains the impressed “Gong Yu” mark, clearly indicating imperial association. Yaobian Jianzhan represents the highest level of Jian ware production, requiring exceptional firing conditions and surviving in extremely limited numbers. With its extraordinary glaze transformation, mature iron body, imperial marking, and preserved inscriptions, this bowl represents one of the most important and desirable examples of Song dynasty tea ceramics.
