Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This Jian Kiln Yaobian Tianmu Jianzhan tea bowl represents one of the most celebrated forms of Song Dynasty tea ware. The bowl features the classic Jian ware “conical” profile with a slightly contracted rim, gracefully curved walls, and a neatly trimmed foot. Its deep black glaze displays a spectacular array of naturally formed iridescent “yaobian” spots, each surrounded by brilliant cobalt-blue halos. Within these luminous circles appear silver and golden crystalline reflections, creating a star-like pattern that spreads from the center toward the rim. The exterior is covered with dark glaze scattered with additional iridescent markings, while the lower body reveals the characteristic coarse dark iron-rich clay body of Jian ware. The unglazed foot exposes the heavy, textured stoneware foundation typical of the kiln. The underside bears the carved inscription “Gong Yu” (供御), traditionally associated with vessels made for imperial use. Yaobian Tianmu represents one of the rarest and most technically challenging categories of Jian ware, and surviving examples are exceptionally scarce. With its extraordinary glaze transformation, authentic iron body, and imperial-related inscription, this bowl stands among the most important surviving examples of Song Dynasty Jian ware.
