Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This Yue celadon large covered jar is an impressive early Chinese ceramic vessel with a powerful presence and refined decorative craftsmanship. The jar features a full rounded body, short straight neck, restrained mouth, flat base, and a matching celadon cover topped with a sculpted mythical animal finial. The cover is richly decorated with molded and applied designs, including scrolling foliage, archaic dragon motifs, and a continuous key-fret border along the rim. The animal finial is modeled with lively details and a distinctive sculptural quality. Two symmetrical raised beast-head handles are applied on the shoulders, complemented by an additional animal mask decoration at the center. The shoulder area is bordered with geometric patterns, followed by heart-shaped scrolling motifs. The body is divided by raised ridges into decorative panels, each featuring large archaistic taotie and phoenix-inspired patterns with elaborate curling lines. Cloud motifs and raised bosses further enhance the layered surface design. The entire vessel is covered in a yellow-green celadon glaze with a mature, softly luminous appearance. Natural age-related crackling and earth-toned deposits enhance its antique character. The exposed mouth rim and base reveal a coarse reddish-brown ceramic body, characteristic of early Yue kiln production. Combining molding, appliqué, and sculptural techniques, this monumental covered jar reflects the influence of ancient bronze ritual forms and represents a rare example of early Yue ware with exceptional historical and artistic importance.
