The exposed foot remains intact with authentic ceramic texture. Provenance: Private Collection, New York, USA.Description: This Southern Song Jizhou kiln tea bowl represents one of the most distinctive ceramic traditions of the Song dynasty. The bowl is formed in a classic conical tea bowl shape with a wide flared rim, curved body, gently tapering lower section, and a shallow foot, creating a balanced and elegant silhouette favored for tea culture during the Song period. The exterior is covered with a deep black glaze, enhanced by naturally flowing tortoiseshell patterns created during firing. Rich brown, amber-orange, and creamy tones blend together across the surface, forming organic variations reminiscent of a tortoiseshell shell. The glaze displays remarkable depth and movement, with a subtle golden-brown edge effect along the rim and delicate natural crazing characteristic of kiln-fired surfaces. The interior features Jizhou kiln’s celebrated paper-cut appliqué technique, with three floral and leaf motifs arranged within the bowl. The decorative patterns are sharply defined, created through black painted outlines and cut-paper stencil methods, while the interior glaze reveals warm brown kiln variations with smooth tonal transitions. A continuous decorative border encircles the inner rim, adding balance and refinement to the composition. The foot is left unglazed, showing a pale gray-beige ceramic body with a simple, natural texture and carefully finished trimming. Combining the unpredictable beauty of tortoiseshell glaze with the refined paper-cut appliqué technique, this Jizhou kiln tea bowl is an outstanding example of Southern Song tea ware and a remarkable expression of Song dynasty ceramic artistry.
