Provenance: Private Collection, California, USA.Description: This Jian Kiln hare’s fur bowl represents the classic form created for Song dynasty tea culture. The bowl features a gently flared rim, a defined raised band at the mouth, a deep rounded body tapering toward the foot, and a restrained yet powerful silhouette typical of Jian ware used in competitive tea drinking. The interior is covered in a deep black glaze decorated with dense golden-brown hare’s fur streaks radiating outward from the center toward the rim. The fine flowing streaks contrast beautifully against the dark glaze, creating a rich and natural kiln effect. The rim gathers into a warm brown glazed edge, adding depth and character. The exterior glaze stops above the foot, revealing a dark iron-rich clay body with the heavy texture characteristic of Jian ware. The exterior walls and foot are extensively carved with cursive-style inscriptions, showing free-flowing knife work and confident brush-like movement. The roughly finished foot exposes the unglazed clay and preserves visible signs of age and use. With its distinctive hare’s fur glaze and carved inscriptions, this bowl captures the timeless character and refined simplicity of Song dynasty Jian tea ware.
