Dimensions: Height 11.5 cm (4.5 inches), maximum diameter 16 cm (6.3 inches), 11th-13th century. Condition and provenance: Overall in good condition, original shape well preserved. Spout and handle are intact. The glaze shows natural signs of aging, with fine crackles and glaze flow effects. Wear and mineral deposits are present on the surface, consistent with the age. The unglazed base exposes the original clay body. Provenance: Private collection, New York, USA. Description: This Song dynasty green-glazed melon-ribbed water jug is a prime example of early low-temperature lead-glazed utilitarian vessels, suitable for holding wine or tea. The body features full melon-ribbed patterns, with vertical ribs outlining a rounded and balanced silhouette. The neck is simple and straight, with a small opening. The spout is short and angular, and the curved ring handle is securely attached to the body. The base is a low, rounded foot, exposing the clay body. The upper part of the vessel is glazed in green, with rich layers of color, and varying shades of green blending naturally on the surface. The glaze is covered with fine crackles, the glaze flowing naturally during firing, creating a dripping texture. The lower part of the body and the foot ring are unglazed, revealing the warm yellowish-brown clay, with a rough and rustic texture, typical of traditional low-temperature lead-glaze firing techniques. Viewed from above, the melon-shaped outline is clearly defined, and the interior space is spacious. This piece has a stable shape, simple craftsmanship, and has withstood the test of time, showcasing the practical beauty of everyday ceramic ware from the Song Dynasty.
