Condition and provenance: Overall in good condition, with natural crackling in the glaze, retaining the original characteristics of kiln firing, and normal surface wear related to the age. Provenance: Private collection, California, USA. Description: This Jingdezhen celadon arhat statue is an outstanding representative of Southern Song Dynasty religious ceramic art. The arhat depicts a bald arhat with long earlobes, slightly closed eyes, and a serene and contemplative expression. The arhat sits on a hollowed-out stone-like base, one leg hanging naturally, the other raised, in a comfortable posture. The left hand holds a ruyi scepter, and the right hand rests elegantly on the knee. The sculpted details are exquisite. The figure wears a wide-sleeved Buddhist robe with distinct folds and smooth lines that naturally conform to the body. The hem, edge of the robe, and scarf-like decorations are all presented with an elegant and realistic style, capturing the soft texture and dynamic beauty of fabric through ceramic sculpture. The figure is entirely covered in a translucent celadon glaze, the surface of which is a soft white with a faint bluish-green tinge. Fine crackles are visible on the glaze, with a deeper glaze in the recessed areas, creating a rich sense of layering and texture. The unglazed hollow base reveals a warm beige clay body, with reddish-brown kiln firing marks—a typical characteristic of hollow molded ceramic sculptures from the Song and Yuan dynasties. The back retains the outline of the Buddha's robe, while the openwork rock-shaped base mimics the texture of natural mountain rocks. The exquisite treatment of the facial expressions, clothing folds, and sculpted base of the Song dynasty celadon religious figure demonstrates its exceptional craftsmanship.
