Description: This Tang Dynasty terracotta figurine depicts a Central Asian rider on a camel, measuring 27 cm in height and 34 cm in length. The sculpture, seamlessly integrated with its rectangular ceramic base, is a funerary object associated with the Silk Road era. The camel is kneeling, head raised, mouth open, as if calling out. Finely engraved lines delineate the layered mane, and the robust limbs and full body give the camel a majestic and lifelike presence. A saddle blanket covers the camel's back, supporting a molded travel bag and cargo. The saddle blanket is decorated with an exaggerated mask of an exotic figure. A Central Asian rider sits atop a camel, wearing a pointed hat, with deep-set eyes, a high nose, and a thick beard. He wears a long robe with a cross-collar and high boots, one hand raised high, a vivid and lifelike pose capturing the spirit of a Silk Road traveler. Traces of grayish-white paint remain on the surface, though some have faded with time. The base retains traces of hand-scraping and molding, while the simple terracotta body and layered carvings demonstrate exquisite craftsmanship. This sculpture vividly reflects the cultural exchange and commercial activities along the ancient Silk Road and is an important representative work of Tang Dynasty ceramic art.
