Private collection, Hong Kong. Description: This is a Song Dynasty Jian ware conical tea bowl. Its elegant conical shape was a common feature in the tea culture of the time, used for tea ceremonies. The wide, flared rim smoothly transitions to a slightly narrower wall and a compact foot, creating a refined yet practical silhouette. Both the interior and exterior are covered with a rich persimmon-red glaze, decorated with naturally formed hare fur patterns. Dense golden-brown crystalline spots radiate outwards from the center of the bowl, the glaze transitioning from a warm persimmon color to a deep chestnut, with an outer layer almost black, showcasing the dramatic firing effect characteristic of Jian ware. The rim of the bowl is covered with a thin glaze, subtly revealing an amber hue, which further accentuates the bowl's exquisite contours. This bowl was fired at extremely high temperatures in a traditional dragon kiln. The beautiful crystalline rabbit fur pattern on the bowl's surface is a natural result of the iron-rich glaze flowing during firing, making each piece unique. Song Dynasty Jian ware tea bowls were highly prized by royalty and literati for enhancing the aesthetic appeal of tea ceremonies. This bowl, combining superb craftsmanship, stunning kiln firing effects, and significant historical value, is a prime example of Song Dynasty Jian ware tea bowls.
